Scholastica’s PDF publishing platform just got an exciting overhaul! We’ve rebuilt publishing from the ground up to make it even more efficient for your journal, with new functionality and an improved design. Check out the details of the newest publishing features below!
Now, you can seamlessly move manuscripts that you’ve peer reviewed and accepted on Scholastica to publishing without having to re-input metadata for articles you choose to publish. Just go to My Journal > Publishing > Click the blue “new” button and choose “article” or “issue.” From there you will see a link to import an article from peer review, which will take you to a list of all the manuscripts you’ve peer reviewed and accepted on Scholastica.
Upon selecting a manuscript, Scholastica will pull in all of its accompanying metadata, so all you have to do is upload the main article file and any accompanying files. If you need to change the order of the authors, just drag and drop those fields! Also, there is now a field for author websites, so authors can choose to add a personal website or social media account to their submission.
Do you have back articles and issues that you’d like to publish on your journal’s Scholastica webpage? Or a manuscript that you peer reviewed outside of Scholastica that’s ready to be published in your next issue?
With the new publishing design, rather than having to upload articles to Scholastica via proxy submissions and then move them from peer review to publishing, you can go straight to your publishing dashboard and upload one-off articles or compile a new issue. Just go to My Journals > Publishing > click on the blue “new” button in the top right of the page and select “article.” From there you’ll be prompted to upload your article and input its accompanying metadata. Once you’re ready you can either immediately publish your article as a standalone publication or click save. In either case you’ll be able to add that article to a new or existing issue later on.
In addition to adding new functionality we’ve given the publishing dashboard a facelift with a more intuitive user experience. Once you’ve created a journal issue you can select articles you’ve peer reviewed on Scholastica and upload any outside articles to fill it, then arrange the issue with ease by dragging and dropping the articles into the order you’d like. Changes to created issues will automatically be saved, so you don’t have to worry about losing work if you leave the page!
Journal articles also have a new design with an improved PDF browser view that features accompanying file images and links on the side of PDFs, making it easier for readers to interact with all elements of an article.
This new look has been automatically applied to journals currently publishing on Scholastica including:
- Administrative Issues Journal: Connecting Education, Practice & Research
- Criminology, Criminal Justice, Law & Society
Does your journal publish individual articles in place of or in addition to journal issues? The new publishing design makes publishing rolling articles even easier than before, with the option to upload one article at a time. Just go to My Journals > Publishing > Articles and click “edit” on the article you’d like to publish. Then scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Publish Article!”
Why publish rolling articles? There are many ways your journal can benefit from publishing articles as you accept them, including:
- Maintaining a stream of fresh content to draw scholars to your website and improve your online search results
- Helping authors get groundbreaking research out to the world faster - and likely drawing more authors to submit to your journal as a result!
- Making your production process more efficient, by only having to prepare individual articles for publication rather than full issues
If you’d like to publish rolling articles but continue to put together journal issues as well, you can get the best of both worlds by publishing individual articles on Scholastica and then easily building an issue with all of those articles every 6 months, yearly, or whenever you like!
Want scholars to come back to your journal webpage in-between publishing new articles or issues? Having a blog is a great way to keep scholars engaged with your journal. You can start your journal’s blog right on Scholastica! Just go to My Journals > Publishing > Blogs. You’ll be taken to your blog dashboard where you can draft and publish posts.
