The UK House of Commons Science and Technology Committee today released a report on “Peer Review in Scientific Publications.” They find much room for improvement, especially suggesting a need for greater transparency. The whole thing is pretty interesting and revealing (and kudos to the MPs for requiring and carrying out such a study!). Of particular interest is Section 3, with some much-needed and too-true observations about a lack of coordination and resources among editors and the ineffective, highly uneven distribution of “burden” on some reviewers while other potential reviewers are sometimes given little opportunity to even learn about the process.
